That’s why I’m attending an avalanche course in Norway.
As a diabetic, I’ve always had a deep passion for outdoor adventures, especially in cold and challenging regions. The upcoming trips I dream of taking demand better preparation, which is why I’ve decided to join a four-day avalanche course in Norway. The course covers learning objectives such as:
As a diabetic, preparation requires extra attention. My insulin pump and infusion set must be well-protected, especially when climbing gear comes into play. The harnesses can dislodge the infusion set, so it’s essential to have a plan for quickly reattaching it if that happens.
Initially, I planned to stay in a tent, but I’ve changed my mind and booked a primitive cabin in the area instead. This gives me better conditions to replace the infusion set away from the cold. A cabin also offers a comfortable alternative if there are evenings without training, sparing me hours of lying in a cramped tent.
When venturing into the cold as a diabetic, preparation is key to success. Fortunately, I gained valuable experience during my trip to Svalbard, where I learned how my insulin sensitivity reacts to the cold. For that trip, I had a custom-made pouch for my insulin pens. I plan to reuse that pouch, but this time for my insulin pump. By adjusting the tubing to point upward toward my chest instead of downward, I should be able to keep it warm and protect it from the cold.
I’m currently organizing my packing list for the trip to Rjukan in the eastern Telemark region of Norway. The preparations are extensive, but they’re part of the adventure and will ensure I’m ready for unforgettable experiences in the snow.
